Afghan rugs are woven out of sheep wool. The grassy, rich Northern Afghanistan produces wool from healthy livestock. The wool is then washed, carefully brushed and spun into balls and then dyed. The weavers use floor or standing looms to weave the rugs. The rugs then undergo light brushing to improve the colour.

You should rub the rug with your open palm. If the wool fibres come out, the carpet is of high quality. Afghan rugs are 100% wool. You can use a lighter (carefully) to singe the edge of the rug. If it turns to ash without burning, it is an authentic, high quality afghan. The knot count too is a good indicator of the quality of your afghan rug. The more knots there are in the rug, the higher the quality of it. Hand woven knots tend to be uneven on the back, while machine woven rugs would have even knots.
How to Clean an Afghan Rug?
Cleaning a natural rug with off-the shelf cleaning products can damage the rug irrevocably. Natural fibre and dye can react badly to bleach and other harsh chemicals. You would need help from someone with experience. If you spill something on your afghan rug, call a carpet cleaner as soon as possible.
