Mortlake

Between Kew and Barnes, on the south bank of the River Thames, lies the suburban neighborhood of Mortlake, which is part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. For most of its history, it was a part of Surrey. And until 1965, it was a part of the Municipal Borough of Barnes. While it held village status for many centuries, it reached as far south as East Sheen and included a portion of Richmond Park.

Throughout the Stuart and Georgian periods, its economic history was dominated by malting, brewing, farming, and watermen. And the Mortlake Tapestry Works (1617–1704) was the most significant producer in Britain. The old Mortlake Brewery, often known as the Stag Brewery, is located on the outskirts of Mortlake and is a London landmark.

There are two probable derivations of the place name “Mortlake,” which first appeared in the Domesday Book in 1086 as “Mortelaga” and “Mortelage.” Assuming the second part is the Old English word lacu, which means “stream,” the first element is most likely the fish-name mort, which means “young salmon,” thus the phrase “salmon stream” comes from there. According to this definition, “Morta’s Meadow” is a dialect term for a long, narrow, swampy meadow, and the second part is the dialect lag. Mortlake was located in the borough of Brixton, which has slipped into obscurity over time.
